Discipleship Evangelism Study

You accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior and the Lord of your life. You have a revelation of God’s love and grace. You leave the church service, evangelism outreach program or praying a prayer of salvation with an individual, then you ask, “Now what?” There was no one there or program available to teach you want you need to know to begin your new Christian life.

That was my experience. I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior when I was 12 years old, at a local evangelistic outreach program. I went down front, my name was put on a card and I was sent home. There was no follow up, nor was I provided any instructions on how to begin this new life. Even the church I attended as a youth did not any kind of structured program for a new Christian.

Unfortunately, the lack of Christian discipleship is still quite prevalent today. To me, it’s like recruiting someone to join the military and sending them off to war without proper training and preparation. They may have the most advanced weapons in the world but they will be defeated in battle because they were not properly conditioned and trained how to use them.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave, what is commonly referred to in the body of Christ as, the great commission to His disciples. Matthew 28:18-2o says,

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.

There are many activities and programs focused on getting people “saved” but not much on teaching. An important part of taking the Good News of the Gospel to the world is to teach. The Greek word for “teach” in verse 19 is the word mathēteuō, which means “to make a disciple; teach, instruct”. The Greek word for “teaching” in verse 20 is the word didaskō, which includes the meanings:

  • to teach
  • to hold discourse with others in order to instruct them, deliver didactic discourses
  • to impart instruction
  • instill doctrine into one

If you feel like you never had proper training in Christian discipleship or teaching in the fundamental aspects of Christianity, but you are looking for a structured approach to learning them, this content may be for you.

My background is computer technology, especially in the software product management and engineering. One of the key principles many in my profession like to follow is, “Why recreate the wheel? If it already exist, and we can get access to it, then let’s use it because it will help us move faster.” The following content is provided with that in mind. Discipleship Evangelism is a program developed by Andrew Wommack and Don Krow, who saw the need for discipleship training. It includes 48 lessons, covering many topics to help followers of Jesus Christ develop a solid foundation for their faith.

They have given permission to reproduce and share this information, as long as it is provided for free. Instead of trying to recreate the wheel, I’m posting their content here.
